Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board

Professional Bio

I am the Manager of EIA for the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board, a court-like Indigenous co-management board that conducts impact assessments (IAs) and makes decisions regarding major industrial developments in northern Canada. For over 27 years, I have conducted and reviewed high profile, politically sensitive IAs in Canada and internationally. I led the IA of Giant Mine, the largest remediation project in Canada’s history.

Internationally, I’m known for my writing, speaking and thinking about IA. I was lead author for a paper that was awarded Impact Assessment and Project Appraisal’s Best Paper of 2015 by IAIA. I regularly give webinars, presentations, interviews and panel talks on best IA practices.

I'm the former President of the IAIA's Western and Northern Canada Affiliate, and am now President-Elect of IAIA.

My latest paper looks at how systems thinking can improve the assessment of proposed projects.
