Course Details
This short (30-minute) course examines how SEA can support sustainable and inclusive decision-making in the tidal power subsector as part of the broader energy transition. We explore how SEA informs the development of tidal energy policies, plans, and programs by addressing both tidal stream and tidal range technologies, identifying key environmental and socio-economic risks and impacts, and highlighting sensitive or unsuitable coastal and marine areas for development.
This course is designed for those who have completed the Foundations of SEA course, or who have some knowledge of the basic principles, stages, and modalities of SEA.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Identify and focus on key environmental and socio-economic issues associated with tidal power and the concerns of likely affected stakeholders, including local communities, marginalized groups, and indigenous peoples.
- Identify/recommend areas that should be avoided for tidal energy development (“no go” areas) because of a particularly high risk to the environment, habitats/biodiversity, and/or people.
- Identify what changes or additions are required to policies, plans, and programs (PPPs) governing tidal energy development to address these risks.
- Make subsequent project-level environmental impact assessments (EIAs) more efficient and cost-effective by addressing the big picture and upstream, downstream, and cumulative potential impacts.
- Engage stakeholders (particularly in areas where tidal energy potential has been identified), including communities, marginalized groups, and indigenous peoples.
- Inform such stakeholders early of proposed or possible policy options or plans.
You will receive a certificate of completion upon successful completion of the course.
Due to the nature of on-demand courses, this purchase is non-refundable and non-transferable.
